Botanical Watercolours for Beginners and Improvers

This course aims to provide an introduction to the beauty and adventure watercolour painting. Through guided exercises, students will explore/ recap the basic techniques of watercolour, including paint consistency, brush techniques and the mixing and application of colour, using a limited and versatile palette. Students will follow a step-by-step approach to create naturalistic flower paintings.

Enjoy learning new skills at a relaxed and friendly pace. Learn watercolour techniques to create vibrant and naturalistic flower paintings. Beginners and improvers welcome.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explore techniques in watercolour including brush techniques, paint consistency and colour mixing.
  • Explore visual elements such as colour, tone, texture and shape.
  • Follow a step-by-step method to create a flower painting(s).
  • Build confidence in creative work by exploring art techniques / processes and sharing ideas with others.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

  • See Canvas for full Materials List. Access to a printer would be useful. Useful colours: Opera Rose, Violet, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue & Phalo Blue Watercolour paper & brushes

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
