Mixed Media for Beginners

An introductory course to mixed media techniques, combining acrylic paint and a range of found media. Follow a series of mini projects to explore the adventure amd expressive potential of mixed media. Learn how to construct and layer mixed media and incorporate textural elements in your artwork. No prior experience necessary - just a willingness to have a go, have fun and share ideas.

Course aim

Enjoy learning new skills at a relaxed and friendly pace. Explore a range of techniques and processes that combine acrylic paint and found media. Have fun and share ideas.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Select and prepare surfaces for mixed media artwork.
  • Explore acrylic painting techniques that combine other media. produce at least one completed piece of art work.
  • Explore visual elements such as colour, shape and texture to create engaging artworks.
  • Build confidence in creative work by exploring art techniques / processes and sharing ideas with others.

How will I be taught?

  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • See Canvas for a full Materials List. Acrylic Paint PVA glue Optional: Glue Gun/ Superglue Surfaces such as stiff cardboard, mountboard, canvas, etc. Collage materials: magazines, maps, photos, old books, emphemera, etc. Collection of brushes

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
