Come to this dynamic and visually enriching course which will introduce you to a variety of techniques, materials and approaches to drawing. We will explore key elements of the visual world, such as line, tone, shape, texture and composition, and discover different ways of using them in responding to the visual world. You will gain an understanding of how other artists have used these in their work. Activities will involve using a range of materials and techniques such as pencil, charcoal, ink and wash.

Course aim

This course is aimed at improving and refreshing your observational drawing skills. Explore both traditional and experimental approaches to drawing, to help you draw what you see and develop your visual skills. All levels / abilities welcome.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Draw from life with increased confidence and skill.
  • Be able to explain key elements such as line, tone, texture, form, composition and shape in the visual world, and how to use them in drawing.
  • Explore and experiment with techniques and materials.
  • Identify which other artists use the visual elements, techniques and materials to express themselves visually.
  • Build confidence in creative work by trying things out and sharing ideas with others.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
