This course aims to provide a introduction to the beauty and adventure watercolour painting for beginners. Through guided exercises, students will explore the basic techniques of watercolour, including paint consistency, brush techniques and the mixing and application of colour, using a limited and versatile palette. Students will begin to explore colour and tonal contrast to create depth and dynamism in watercolour compositions.

Course aim

Learn watercolour techniques form scratch, to create vibrant and naturalistic paintings. Beginners and improvers welcome.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create a colour wheel from a limited palette, exploring the properties and relationships of colour.
  • Explore and execute a range of washes and textures in watercolour.
  • Explore the mixing and application of colour: mixing on the palette, wet-in-wet and glazing.
  • Build confidence in creative work by exploring art techniques / processes and sharing ideas with others.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
