Level 1 Award in Creative Craft – Textiles

This is an accredited course. You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short initial assessment activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464 On this course you will undertake a textiles project to produce a design of your own choice with support and guidance from your tutor. You will explore the properties and characteristics of different materials and develop your use of tools and equipment for working with selected materials. You will also learn about health and safety procedures. When you have completed your project, you will have the opportunity to review it and share it with the group.

Additional information about this course

To enrol on this course students must contact Tees Valley Women's Centre (01642) 296166 for the pin number to enrol onto this course. This is so the centre can check if child care is necessary whilst student is on the course.

Course aim

On this course you will learn how to select, prepare and use the correct tools and materials you need to undertake a textiles project in a safe working environment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plan a textile project
  • Identify the properties and characteristics of different materials
  • Use materials, tools and equipment correctly and safely
  • Complete and present final textile craft item
  • Review my own work and the process involved in creating a textile item, taking into account feedback from others

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions, short tasks and research

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials will be provided (basic student kit) but you are encouraged to bring additional materials with you. Your tutor will discuss this with you during your first session. Support fund is available for those in receipt of benefits. Your tutor will guide you through this process.
