Students wishing to join an EME course need to complete an initial assessment before they start. The initial assessment event is designed to test students’ current skills. During initial assessment, students will work with WEA staff to agree the current level that they are working at and discuss the best course for them to develop their skills.

This is not a course. It is an initial assessment for English, Maths and/or ESOL. At the end of the assessment you will know which course is right for you.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- No skills or experience needed
- If you have any English, Maths or ESOL certificates please bring them with you
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Identify my starting point in English, Maths or ESOL
- Know which course is best for me
- Enrol on a WEA English, Maths or ESOL course if one is available
How will I be taught?
- This is not a course so no teaching methods will be used and there will be no work outside of the class.
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will receive feedback from a qualified English, Maths or ESOL professional during your initial assessment. This feedback will help you to identify your starting point and which course is best for you.
What else do I need to know?
- If you have any English, Maths or ESOL certificates please bring them with you.
Pre-course work, reading and information sources
- No pre reading or pre course work is required
What can I do next?
- You may be able to enrol on one of the WEA English, Maths or ESOL courses after the initial assessment
