Masterpieces: Beyond Europe - Caroline Levisse

Ref: C2422072

When we think of masterpieces of art, most of us will think about European paintings and sculptures, probably made during the Renaissance and after. In this exciting course, we will challenge this eurocentrism. Each week we will look into a new region of the world or different era, and study some of the masterpieces that have been created there and then. We will consider cave paintings and sculptures made during the Palaeolithic, medieval mosaics, Chinese scroll paintings, Buddhist sculptures from India and Korea, Iranian ceramics, and much more. Do these works fit our idea of the masterpiece? What constitutes great art in other cultures?
