What is it about counselling that attracts people from all walks of life. That's just about people wanting to help another who is suffering in some way, whose emotions might be getting confused and this is causing anxiety on a daily level. Sometimes people just want someone to talk to. This short course is to introduce some of the skills and attitudes a counselor needs to work with people and help them get over their personal hurdle. The main method used in the course is discussion as we explore the differing theories of those who developed the practice of counselling.

This course will introduce the student to the main skills needed in the art and practice of counselling
Do I need any particular skills or experience?

- This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
- This is a live lecture delivered by a subject specialist in an online webinar video learning platform. You will need to be able to access the internet on a device with speakers or earphones. - This course is for beginners
- Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Gain an initial understanding of the purpose and practice of Counselling
- Gain an initial understanding of the Counselling “Core Conditions” and how they must apply in all forms of counselling practice
- Gain an initial understanding of the 3 major schools of counselling practice and explore some of the theories that lie behind the practice
- Consider the “Internal Frame of Reference”
- Gain an appreciation of the importance of ethics and the sound moral conduct needed for counselling practice
How will I be taught?
- The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course. - The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

- You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
