Through "slow looking" at a selection of key works, we will learn more about their history and composition, and the techniques and styles used by the artist. We will look into what is innovative or special about them explore how they fit into a particular moment or movement in art history.

Course aim

Over six weeks, we will explore 12 key works in art history, looking beyond the familiar to develop a deeper understanding what makes these paintings masterpieces.Film clips will be shown via screen sharing in Zoom clips can be shown with subtitles?

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need your own personal email address so that you’re able to login to the WEA’s digital learning platform: WEA Canvas.   • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • By the end of the course, I will have gained a greater understanding of key works of art
  • By the end of the course, I will have developed my understanding of key periods, styles and techniques in art history
  • By the end of the coruse, I will have practised the analysis of paintings

How will I be taught?

  • We will study two paintings per session in some detail and discuss them. We will use resources like Google arts and culture and those produced by major museums. Context and background will be provided. Resources for further study/exploration will be distributed via Canvas.
