India has a long history of art since 8,000 BCE. The introductory six weeks course will cover the following: Wall paintings and the Ajanta Caves, sculpture and the Northern Empires, temple architecture in the Middle and Southern Kingdoms, miniature paintings and the Mughal Empire, Empire Art of the East India Company and Influence of Early Modernism on Indian contemporary art.

Course aim

To introduce and discuss certain features of Indian Art from Rock Architecture to Early Modern Paintings

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Build familiarity with the long history of Indian Art
  • Discuss the features of Indian Art in different historical and geographical context
  • Identify key periods in the history of Indian Art.
  • Understand and explain the influences on contemporary art

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
