Arabic Spain 711 to 1485 AD, Archaeology, Architecture and History

Ref: C2344756

This course will look at the history and archaeology of Spain's Arabic past. Major Arabic buildings remain from the four dynastic periods of Arabic rule as do important works of art. The 750 years of Arabic influence have also left enduring linguistic, cultural and genetic footprints in Spain's population and landscape. We shall explore these themes through the existing cultural remains of a once vibrant yet 'foreign' society within medieval Europe.

Course aim

This five week course is designed to introduce students to the history, architecture, art and archaeology of Islamic or Arabic in the period 711 to 1485. Spain is the only western European country to have had an Arabic past.
