Ours to Defend - Leicestershire in the Second World War

The course will include the attitudes during and effects of the "Phoney War" during the first few months of the conflict (eg: conscription, air raid precautions) and the ongoing disruption of normal life patterns by measures like rationing and commandeering of resources, and how local industries were mobilised to play a part in the war effort. We will also be looking at the extent of the bombing raids on Leicester and the county and the effects on the population together with the impact of aspects like evacuees, prisoners of war, "digging for victory" and the arrival of US troops, together with the role played by women in the maintenance of essential services and work in munitions factories. It will also include stories involving local servicemen involved in the various campaigns.

Course aim

To provide a detailed knowledge of the life changing effects of the Second World War on the everyday lives of Leicestershire people both in the armed forces and on the Home Front.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • No skills or experience needed
  • No experience necessary, just an enthusiasm to get involved in learning about local history.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Evaluate the contribution of female workers to the war effort in both city and county.
  • Explain how local industries and agriculture adapted to the changes required by the nation being at war including the problems encountered.
  • Utilise a range of evidence to show the effects of bombing raids on Leicester and the way in which the civilian population was able to cope with them.
  • Provide examples of how everyday life was affected by the lifestyle changes imposed by wartime conditions eg: blackout, rationing.
  • Produce a range of evidence to show the social disruption caused by particular developments in wartime life eg: the arrival of evacuee children, prisoners of war and US armed forces personnel.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • No additional work is required by some students do enjoy doing independent research and sharing it with the group.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: http://bit.ly/ZoomSpec
  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
