A craft workshop inspired by Celtic art and design which includes a diversity of spirals, knots, patterns and fantastic creatures. Have fun using a variety of resources and techniques to produce cards and decorative items inspired by the beautiful patterns and imaginative creatures associated with Celtic imagery. The course will include a variety of papercraft techniques, painting on glass and/or tiles, colouring illuminated lettering and simple embossing to create a 3D effect. A brief historical overview will be included, in addition to investigating images of Celtic art and design for inspiration. Beginners and experienced crafters all welcome.
Course aim
To introduce the origins of Celtic design and explore how these distinctive patterns and motifs have inspired different forms of decoration and to use a variety of techniques and materials to produce 2D and 3D artwork inspired by Celtic designs.

- This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Have a basic knowledge and understanding of the history and origins of Celtic design
- Identify examples of Celtic design and how they have been interpreted and applied
- Use a variety of materials and embellishments to create a 3-dimensional decorative item inspired by Celtic designs
- Use three different craft techniques to produce a greeting card inspired by Celtic designs
- Know where to access resources
How will I be taught?
- The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.
