Cathedrals and Abbeys are important national sites and treasure troves of history, heritage and community. Explore a selection of English Cathedrals and Abbeys, discover a wealth of architectural styles and features and investigate a selection of intriguing facts, stories and legends. This introductory course will include looking at how evidence associated with Cathedrals and Abbeys can help us learn about people in the past and how they lived.
Course aim
This introductory course will aim to introduce the rich diversity of English Cathedrals and Abbeys and explore what we can learn about their history, architectural styles and the stories they have to tell.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?

- This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Recognise three different periods of Ecclesiastical Architecture
- Identify three common features within a Cathedral and understand their function
- Recognise the role of Cathedrals and Abbeys in Medieval times
- Have an increased knowledge of Cathedrals and Abbeys and the stories they have to tell
- Understand where to access further information and resources
How will I be taught?
- The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.
