Practical Art for a Positive You

This course will help you to express yourself using colour and to appreciate that each colour relates to various emotions. These are different for all individuals. there is no right, no wrong. If using colour is not for you, then there are other means of expressing yourself, one of which is doodling, pen work in producing zentangles and there are a lot of more methods used which can improve our mental and physical health ans well as our emotional being.

Course aim

This course is about increasing your self-esteem and develop a greater self-awareness. It is all about having an outlet to express yourself freely which will promote a healthier and a happier you.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This is a live lecture delivered by a subject specialist in an online webinar video learning platform. You will need to be able to access the internet on a device with speakers or earphones.   • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • You must be a Union Learning Representative (ULR) of an affiliated union to the TUC to enrol on this course
  • For all people who wish to use art as a form of therapy,

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • use art as a form of self-expression and stress-release
  • use deeper explorations of feelings by using paint
  • use colours to express inner and outer emotions.
  • appreciate art created by others and make informal, informed judgements about works of art

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You have a choice to do other activities if you feel a particular activity is not for you.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Your tutor will provide written, text and audio feedback recorded in WEA Canvas, WEA’s digital learning platform.
  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Collate all your work and this could be presented on social media if you so wish

What else do I need to know?

  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit: http://bit.ly/ZoomSpec
  • As we are unable to provide the resources, it would be very helpful if you could purchase watercolours and a couple of brushes, watercolour paper, watercolour pencils, pencil, rubber and a fine black liner pen, also sketching paper Handouts will be sent to you through your email address or post.

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
