While Michelangelo dominated the first half of the century his influence was the major factor in the development art and architecture outside Venice. We will look at some of his friends and associates and consider the origins and appeal of what is now called Mannerism. Venice went its own way artistically and we will consider the achievements of Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto, as well as the architecture of Palladio and his contemporaries. We will also consider the painting, architecture and sculpture of Florence and northern Italy in the later sixteenth century.
Course aim
