What is the purpose of mentoring? What is a mentor’s role? This course introduces you to the role of the mentor and give you an introduction to the skills required as well as an overview of the legal and or ethical responsibilities that mentors have.

Course aim

The course aims to give students an Introduction to mentoring including: understanding the role, developing mentoring skills and exploring the legal and ethical responsibilities of mentors.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Anyone interested in becoming a mentor

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the role of the mentor
  • Recognise the skills and tools required to become a mentor
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the legal and ethical requirements of mentoring

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions, short tasks and role plays You will be encouraged to develop your mentoring skills and reflect on your development over the course

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • This course could lead to volunteer mentoring role in a local volunteer’s organisation or to a formal qualification in Mentoring.
