What was the life of ordinary people in the USSR like during the Cold War - one of the most controversial periods in World history? The Tutor, who was born and brought up in the USSR, shares her experience and illustrates her talks with period artefacts from her family archive, video and audio materials. The course invites you to make comparisons with the life in the UK and discuss to what extent Western myths and stereotypes reflected the Soviet reality. You will also learn some Basic Russian. The course is supplemented with interactive activities, a Reading list and handouts with follow up tasks, which help you revise the material and conduct your own research.

Course aim

1st course in the series based on Marina Burrell’s experience of living in the USSR and on the artefacts from her family archive. It aims to help students develop a better understanding of current affairs rooted in the Soviet period.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Anyone interested in Russian history, culture or language or willing to travel to Russia.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Develop a better understanding of Russia, her people & culture.
  • 2. Relate Russia's recent past to her present for better understanding of current affairs.
  • 3. Compare life in the USSR with life in the UK during the Cold War.
  • 4. Use some basic Russian words and phrases.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • • Open discussions and virtual travels. • You can share your own experience of visiting Russia or exhibitions, reading books & watching films. • Reading list and handouts with follow-up tasks for revision.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
