This course explores the rise of crime as a form of entertainment during the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Starting with real life 'sensationalised' killings such as the Ratcliffe Highway Murders and Maria Marten and the Red Barn, we will discuss the role the press played in manipulating public opinion, and phenomena such as Murder Tourism and the Murder Souvenir trade. We will then explore the media that grew out of public obsession with crime- broadsides, patter songs, penny dreadfuls, melodrama and marionette theatre. The course concludes with discussion of the rise of the Golden Age of Crime Fiction in the early twentieth century, and the popularity of authors such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, thinking particularly about how world events may have changed the ways in which the public wanted to experience crime as entertainment.

Course aim

This course explores the rise of crime as a form of entertainment during the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, culminating in the 'Golden Age of Crime Fiction' during the 1920s and 30s.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Analyse the rise of crime as a form of entertainment during the nineteenth century.
  • Evaluate the role the press played in forming public opinion towards crime in the nineteenth century.
  • Explore the range of different media available as entertainment in the nineteenth century and how crime was sensationalised by these media.
  • Develop an understanding of the explosion in popularity of crime fiction during the early-twentieth century.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Your tutor will provide written, text and audio feedback recorded in WEA Canvas, WEA’s digital learning platform.
  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
