Aimed primarily at people with a hearing loss. Groups are held in a supportive, caring environment with like minded people. The course helps to supplement their residual hearing by using other skills and strategies, enabling them to get more out of conversations and interaction with others.

Course aim

Acquire lip-reading skills, strategies, get more out of conversations in everyday situations. Understand the individual effects of hearing loss, find personal strategies to improve communication skills, increase confidence.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This is a live lecture delivered by a subject specialist in an online webinar video learning platform. You will need to be able to access the internet on a device with speakers or earphones.   • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Sufficient IT skills to use ZOOM, video conferencing platform, to a basic level.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Lip read and finger spell more confidently and be able to explain to others how good communication tactics will help them to understand and participate continuing from the previous sessions.
  • Demonstrate the confidence to ask others to modify their speech in helpful ways to enable them to join in with less difficulty than before.
  • Identify and explain about environmental aids and know how and where to obtain these, including any recently released technology.
  • Improve relationships with friends and family with greater understanding and communication. Gain confidence and skills in using video technology to remain in contact with friends and family.
  • Note – developments will take place within each outcome each term depending on ability level.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course. If you want to understand more about our digital learning platform please visit:
  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have the opportunity to discuss your progress with your tutor by e-mail or private, pre-arranged ZOOM conversation.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • What you need: You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. If you’d like to understand more Zoom please visit:
  • Pen and Paper/Note Book. Computer, Lap Top or Tablet with access to ZOOM video conferencing platform.
