'Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar'. Contrary to popular belief, Freud may have never said this. This statement and its vague origins reflect upon the potential power and abuse of analysis. A ruined chair could be classed as 'art' by some and 'pretentious' by others. Watching 'Sonic The Hedgehog' with the same mindset as one might have for 'Eraserhead' would be unnecessary. Alas these situations expose analysis to be the entertaining minefield that it is! In this course we will discuss how we may typically perceive and process texts before working to recognise other possible interpretations. We will experience how analysis can help us appreciate texts we may otherwise deem to be 'nonsensical'. And finally we will contemplate and practice the ways in which we as writers and creators might insert our own deeper meanings into texts. This course will utilise lecture, discussion, case studies, and various exercises to understand analysis and writing with meaning!
Course aim
This short course aims to introduce and practice the technique of technical analysis before then examining how we as writers might work to insert deeper meanings into our own works.
