The course aims to introduce and develop your knowledge in areas relating to working in adult social care such as communication, equality, legislation and safeguarding. You will understand personal development and the role of the social care worker. Through the course you will learn how to handle and record information. You will understand health and safety legislation and explore the areas of safeguarding, duty of care and person-centred approaches.

Course aim

This qualification is designed for student’s interested in, or new to, working in adult social care in England. It covers a range of key areas of knowledge applicable to working in the sector.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course is aimed at adults aged 19 or over who are interested in working or volunteering in a health care setting

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand different forms of effective communication in adult social care settings
  • Understand the importance of personal development
  • Be aware of Safeguarding and Protection of vulnerable adults in adult social care settings
  • Demonstrate understanding of Policies and Procedures, Health and Safety Legislation and confidentiality in adult social care settings
  • Identify the different work roles in adult social care

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need an A4 Lever Arch file, paper and pen
