Course aim

This Open College qualification enables learners to develop confidence and fluency and a sound grasp of English knowledge and skills by using it in real-world situations.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • All students are checked to ensure they are ready for this course or will have a English Level 1 qualification. This is an improvers course helping to develop English skills for those returning to learning. It will help students to work towards higher Maths qualifications including GCSEs

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Read critically to evaluate and compare information, ideas and opinions from different sources
  • Choose an appropriate writing style, including choice of vocabulary, formality, layout and length, to achieve a specific purpose (e.g. instruct, persuade, entertain, inform) and/or for a given audience
  • Use a full range of punctuation to ensure clarity of meaning
  • Adapt my contribution to a discussion based on the audience, context, purpose and situation, making appropriate choices of vocabulary, formality and tone of voice
  • To research and give a short presentation on a given subject, presenting the information clearly and coherently, using an appropriate level of formality

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

  • Nothing else is needed
