The Art Class (Congleton)

This is for anyone regardless of ability and experience to try different techniques and ideas in art . Through the media of watercolour, acrylics and drawing materials such as graphite,inks and pastels we will work from themes taken from landscape subjects,still life, people and animals. You can specialise in one topic if you so wish or even work on your own ideas where you will receive help. Individual interpretation of the proposed themes will be encouraged. Discussing your work with others in the group is an important aspect of this course.

Course aim

To explore different ideas and techniques in painting and drawing and encourage students to develop their own ideas.

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of colour, tone, proportion and perspective.
  • Show more experience with using painting and drawing materials.
  • Demonstrate more confidence in developing my own ideas and have a more individual interpretation of the set topics.
  • Explain a better understanding of the history of art and the art of other cultures.
  • Show more confidence in discussing my work with others and comparing ideas.

How will I be taught?

  • The teacher will give demonstrations of techniques and bring in examples and pictures or subjects to work from. There will be worksheets showing the work in stages.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • The teacher will give demonstrations on techniques and provide'how to do it' work sheets to help.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need the basic painting and drawing materials. You will be given time to acquire what you need as future topics will be discussed at least a week in advance to give you time to prepare. The teacher can provide some basic materials.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Access to an image capture device such as a camera or phone will be most helpful.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
