Drawing and Painting/Mixed Media Art for Beginners and Improvers

Join our progressive group of Learner Artists learning sound drawing & painting skills in a variety of media, such as pencils, graphite sticks & charcoal leading to Watercolour, Pen & ink, Acrylic, Oils & Pastels. Theory & Observational Drawing & Sketching, mainly for Beginners, will focus on Landscape & its main components such as trees, buildings, seascapes, leading to the use of Perspective, Light & Shade, & Colour. Advanced & Improver Students will be tutored individually or in small groups working on their own chosen projects.

Course aim

Learn sound drawing & painting skills in a variety of chosen media leading to the development of greater visual awareness, creativity skills, & to a worthwhile & satisfying hobby or pastime.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Draw & Paint with greater skill & confidence.
  • Develop personal ideas through the media of choice.
  • Master some of the drawing skills in Light & Shade on observed natural & man made subjects.
  • Demonstrate a greater appreciation of Proportion, Form & Beauty.
  • Discover the therapeutic benefits of doing Art & becoming visually more aware of the world about us.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Be prepared to purchase Art materials from time to time eg A4 Cartridge pad ,A range of pencils,Putty rubber,& a selection of your own chosen Painting materials & equipment

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be able to keep a record of your progress and achievement using photos, audio, text or documents uploaded into the WEA’s digital learning platform, WEA Canvas.
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Tablets & Iphones etc.can be used to aid learning & to record the various stages of drawing development from the Tutor's Flip-Chart.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • The tutor has a range of Art books,& we have a library of our own art books for reference.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
