Calligraphy and Illustration for Beginners and Improvers

Enjoy the delights of creating beautiful writing.Calligraphy is a subject where the basic skills are within most of us already in our handwriting. This will be an opportunity to improve on this, learning through one to one tuition in easy to learn stages over 8-10 weeks. We start with the Foundational Hand, more advanced students can learn Italic or Gothic hands any variations, leading to creative work such as poetry or quotations using colour & simple illustration or decoration.

Course aim

This course is for the complete beginner as well as for those with more advanced skills in Calligraphy :The Art of Beautiful Writing.You will be taught in easy stages with one to one tuition.This can lead to some creative work later.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

  • Some homework will be of great benefit for advancing learning

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn to use a square edged nib with a reasonable degree of skill, dexterity & confidence.
  • Develop skills with layout & spacing.
  • Develop simple decoration or illustration for eg a poem, quotation or greeting card.
  • Discover the excellent therapeutic values in doing calligraphy.
  • Enjoy the challenge of doing a personal project such as your own greeting cards.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Some homework to support the class learning will be encouraged

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • We have a good resource library in the work room which provides helpful information on Calligraphy.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • There will be opportunities to join in an extension to this course later on. The North West Calligraphy Association meets once monthly at Waverton, Chester & welcomes new Learner Members. These courses run from 10.00 to 4.00 on a Saturday with guest tutors who are experts in their own field.
