Art - Practical: Colour and Perspective

This course is suitable for beginners and improvers with a willingness to experiment with line , tone and colour. You will be able to express issues related to portraiture and the landscape and can work on your own ideas.

Course aim

This course will enable the learner to experiment with basic art techniques , use of line and tone but also the use of colour to express issues related to portraiture and the landscape

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No experience necessary although interest, energy and enthusiasm a must!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Complete a Colour Wheel
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Colour mixing to select the appropriate colours to complete a tonal and colour still life
  • Use line and tone to complete a portrait
  • Display increased confidence and well being
  • Select a painting or drawing from a book or Gallery and discussed its merits with the group

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Students may be asked to undertake homework to re enforce the learning. This is discussed and evaluated with the group at the start of each lesson.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Progress discussed with student throughout the course. This is supported by Q and A and an end of course review.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Although I have some materials , students may want to bring some pencils, an A2 sketchbook , paint and brushes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students may want to research painting and drawing methods and to look at artwork to be inspired by.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Students may want to progress to another course with the W.E.A or to attend a Foundation course with another provider such as Stockport or Manchester Art colleges.
