This course help students to develop an understanding of garment construction using a range of sewing skills & techniques. Students will continue to develop an understanding of sewing terms during the pattern and learn how to read data & taking accurate body measurements, developing fitting techniques & making simple pattern adjustments to create a better fitting garment. Also constructing the garment students will undertake a group project to learn team building skills and work together in a team to produce a simple saleable garment. Opportunity to discuss job roles in the sewing trade or recognise key factors that could enhance employability. Students will need a comprehensive sewing kit although some resources will be provided. If you feel that you may struggle to purchase this kit & this would prevent you from attending the course there is a fund that students can apply for to cover the cost. Course aim

to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand a commercial pattern with a view to making a garment with sleeves and to work as part of a team and to identify why team - working is important in the workplace

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students should have basic knowledge and understanding of how to thread and use a sewing machine

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • read pattern data and instructions with confidence
  • take accurate measurements and make simple pattern adjustmenrts if neccessary
  • Create and develop a simple project, make a costing and look at time and motion studies as part of a team
  • Make a garment project with woven fabric that has a long or short sleeve.
  • Identify job roles with the sewing industry and recognise key factors that would enhance any other employability

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A selection of materials will be available for samples but students will provide their own pattern, fabric and thread for their individual project. Materials will be provided for the team project.
