European Modern Art Between the Wars 1919-39

This course will look in detail at Modern Art made in the period between the two World Wars, from 1919 to 1939. From the art made in Germany during the rise of the Nazis, to Russian art and design in the wake of the revolution. We will also discuss the art being made at the centre of modernism in Paris, and at the work produced in Britain during the period, as well as the political and social context in which the art was made.

Course aim

To describe and discuss Modern Art made in Europe between the World Wars, from 1919 to 1939, and to inform about the events and individuals working at the time.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the art made in Europe between the two World Wars, as well as the social and political context.
  • Identify the key events and movements involved in the making of art of the period.
  • Discuss the exceptional work of Modern artists of the period, such as Picasso, Mondrian, and Hepworth.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
