This course is designed to give students improved discussion skills to be able to join in discussions confidently on a range of subjects in formal situations such as required as a volunteer, benefit interviews & medical appointments.

Course aim

To give students the skills to enter into discussion confidently in formal situations

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for students who attend a specific centre only. For more information please call 0300 303 3464

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • • Identify a formal situation where you will need to discuss your circumstances
  • • Describe a formal situation when you might need to discuss a personal experience
  • • identify any assistance you might need in a situation described above
  • • Join in a range of class discussions, stating your personal opinion

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The course will take place in the students’ home. It is discussion based & will focus on the needs of the individual, regarding their health and well-being and rights. Students will be encouraged to bring in a relevant discussion topic for the class.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Students are unable to leave their home unaided so library visits would depend on help from relations
