This course provides a good grounding in the everyday uses of computers and the internet in a relaxed and friendly environment. Skills covered include using ‘word’ to create, format and save documents, identifying and correcting errors and finding information on the internet. Our courses are friendly and help you to develop at your own pace whilst becoming a confident user.

There are 3 digital hours in addition to the 18 guided learning hours classroom hours This course is only open to residents who reside in the Greater Manchester Combined Authority region

Course aim

Start to develop your computer skills to enable you to use a range of programs safely and effectively to help prepare you for the world of work. Feel confident in your daily use of a computer.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use the correct procedures to start and shut down a computer.
  • Open, save and retrieve documents.
  • Use simple editing and formatting techniques, e.g. insert/delete text, select font size and style and embolden text.
  • Use a spellchecker to identify and correct simple errors.
  • Use simple search facilities to find specified information. Be able to describe online safety issues about your personal information and know-how to keep yourself safe.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
