The course will enable Trade Union Health and Safety Representatives to build the skills and knowledge needed to carry out their role in the workplace. This will include understanding current health and safety legislation, how to prevent hazards, carrying out health inspections and risk assessments. Students will explore equality and diversity issues, how to conduct member surveys and presenting cases to management.

Course aim

This is a national qualification at Level 2 for Trade Union Health and Safety Representatives to enable them to be more effective as representatives in the workplace.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • You must be a Union Learning Representative (ULR) of an affiliated union to the TUC to enrol on this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand current health and safety legislation for the prevention of hazards
  • Understand specific regulations which can be used to improve health and safety at work
  • Link health and safety inspections with employer risk assessments,
  • Understand equality and diversity issues in the context of health and Safety
  • Conduct member surveys, devise strategy and present union cases to management

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions, short tasks and research

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • You will receive written feedback on course work and on your individual progress from your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need an A4 Lever Arch file, paper and pen
