The course will cover the basics such as writing a business plan, how to market your business, record keeping & accounts etc. We will look at need analysis, competition & making your idea unique. Home study ‘discovery exercises’ will be set. Digital research will be a major part of this course. Term 1 – 3/9; 10/9; 17/9; 24/9; 1/10; 8/10; 15/10; 22/10; (no session 29/10 & 5/11); 12/11; 19/11. Term 2 - 7/1; 14/1; 21/1; 28/1; 4/2; 11/2; (no session 18/2); 25/2; 3/3; 10/3; 17/3. Term 3 – 14/4; 21/4; 28/4; 5/5; 12/5; 19/5; (no session 26/5); 2/6; 9/6; 16/6; 23/6.

Course aim

To cover the basics of starting a small trading business, from having the idea to getting up & running to raise money for the centre using digital methods wherever possible.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Come up with an idea for a small business
  • Produce some basic marketing materials
  • State what records need to be kept & why
  • Assess their own & each other’s work through critical analysis

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

  • All materials will be provided

  • Collaborative group preparation is required for this course
