The Psychology of Addiction

This is a course looking at the psychology of and definition of addiction. It will cover a range of addictions, their causes and treatments. It is intended to be for all and help us understand this topic in the mind, body and in society. There will be (optional) exercises, and a set of web links and videos to allow learners to follow up the topic.

The timings of the day school are 11am - 3pm with lunch from 12.30-1.30pm

Course aim

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • suggest a definition for addiction
  • identify a range of addictions and addictive behaviour
  • list some explanations of addictions and discussed with others
  • discuss some treatments of addictions
  • follow up the topic using the web inks

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • There will be actives to do and take away and a set of web links to follow up the course.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
