This course is suitable for beginners and improvers with a willingness to experiment with line and tone. You will be able to express issues related to portraiture and the landscape and can work on your own ideas.

Course aim

The course will enable students to experiment with basic art techniques, use of line and tone to express issues related to portraiture and the landscape

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No experience necessary but energy and enthusiasm a must!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have completed 2 portraits , one in line and and one in tone to express an issue
  • Distinguished negative space within a drawing
  • Created a tonal range within a portrait or landscape
  • Have a better understanding of proportion and scale within a drawing
  • Developed my spiritual, physical and mental well being and social skills

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • You will be asked to carry out homework in your own time. This will be discussed and evaluated with group at the start of each lesson. The teacher will give demos and individual help will be available.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be able to keep a record of your progress and achievement using photos, audio, text or documents uploaded into the WEA’s digital learning platform, WEA Canvas.
  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will be asked to discuss your work within the group and have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • There should be some materials at the centre but it may be a good idea to bring an A2 sketchbook and pencil. The tutor and students will work from life but the tutor will also provide source material and pictures to work from.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • No pre reading or course work required although students may want to research art techniques before starting the course.
