Art - Practical: The Art Class (Congleton)

This is a course for everyone regardless of ability and experience. You will have an opportunity to try drawing and painting materials such as pencils,pastels,inks,watercolours and acrylics. You will have a great opportunity to meet others and share your experiences.

Course aim

This is a general art course for anyone who is interested in trying different techniques in art using subjects in landscape,still life peoole and animals. You can also concentrate one particular topic if you wish.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • The course is for anyone with an interest in practising art

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate confidence in using art materials, and discussing and sharing experience with others.
  • Discover the therapeutic values of art including by being able to meet people with similar interests.
  • Specialise on a particular subject or technique to improve personal interpretation and style.
  • Demonstrate a better understanding of tone , colour, perspective and proportion to help improve artwork.
  • Recognise more about art and artists generally including looking at other cultures such as Chinese art and even draw inspiration from them.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The will discuss and reach agreement with you on future topics thus giving you time to collect information such as pictures you can work from. The tutor will give you 'how to do ' examples to help you if you so wish.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • The tutor will always give you the opportunity to discuss your progress and compare your results with others in the group.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • An image capturing device such as a camera or mobile phone will be very helpful in letting you get information to back up your ideas. Access to the internet will be valuable in helping you research your topics further.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Visits to art exhibitions when ever possible will prove stimulating and help you broaden your approach.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
