This course will take the form of visual presentations and discussion of the major developments in Modern Art from around 1870 with Impressionism, through all the major developments in art up to the Second World War.

Course aim

To look at and discuss the beginnings of Modern Art0, from Impressionism through all the major 'movements' in art up to the start of World War II.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the history of Modernism and the art of the period stated.
  • Analyse and evaluate the art of the late 19th and early 20th century.
  • Explain the broader historical context in which the art was made.

How will I be taught?

  • Further reading outside the course is encouraged, but not necessary.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Tutor will discuss the degree of progress and learning for individuals as we go along.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Any further study is up to the individuals.
