The early modern period is one of the most engaging periods of history. Beginning with upheavals of the Reformation, and ending with the Enlightenment, this was a time of fundamental social, religious, cultural and intellectual change, but also of strong continuities with earlier times. This course provides a historical introduction to the period.

Course aim

This course will provide an introduction to the social and cultural history of early modern Europe.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the major historical changes and developments that defined early modern Europe during the period 1500-1789
  • Recognise some of the social and cultural forces that drove and shaped European history during this period
  • Identify the terms of the current historical debates about early modern Europe

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • The teaching will be based on illustrated, lecture style sessions with opportunities for questions and discussions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
