Literature: An introduction to a selection of Thomas Hardy's novels and poetry

This course will examine two of Thomas Hardy's novels - 'Far From the Madding Crowd' and 'The Mayor of Casterbridge'; and also a selection of his poetry. The course will look at how Hardy creates his fictional Wessex as well as exploring some major themes of time, fate and grief in both novels and poems

Course aim

This course will look at a selection of work by Thomas Hardy. It will look at two novels and some of his poetry with the aim of examining his main themes and the 'Wessex' world he created

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the main themes in two of Hardy's novels
  • Analyse a range of Hardy's poetic devices
  • Discuss the influence of Hardy's work on later novelists
  • Analyse Hardy's use of character in his novels

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring along copies of the two novels Tutor will provide the poems
