This war between Russia and Japan in 1904/05 is possibly one of the least remembered wars of the twentieth century and yet it had far reaching consequences in both the Far East and Europe. On the centenary of the conflict some historians referred to it as World War Zero. That may be over-egging things but it is important to an understanding of twentieth century history. We will look at the background to the war in both Russia and Japan and their competing ambitions in East Asia. We will take a broad look at the land war, noting the developments in tactics and weapons that anticipated the Great War of 1914-18. After examining the great naval battle of Tsushima we will discuss how the conflict ended and the longer term implications.
