British Sign Language

This course is for anyone wishing to learn sign language at a basic level and an interest in developing their awareness of the history and culture of the hearing-impaired community. You will learn to finger-spell the alphabet for spelling everyday words, signs for words such as countries, cities, food, drink and many other signs to help you communicate with the hearing-impaired. Supported learning will be in the form of games, videos, online activities and paired conversation practice, in a safe, relaxed and positive environment. You will receive regular feedback on your progress.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) using and understanding of everyday basic signs. Also, to become aware of some of the history behind the development of sign language as a form of communication.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • sign some basic information about myself
  • sign at least 3 questions asking for information
  • use signs for at least 5 family relationships
  • use British sign language to sign at least 5 different types of jobs
  • fingerspell at least 6 everyday words

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • ongoing feedback on practical activities i.e. pair-work

  • Nothing else is needed
