Annie Brassey -Conjuring the East

Ref: C3745275

In 1876 Lady Annie Brassey and her children, friends and pets sailed around the world in her private steam yacht the Sunbeam. During her remarkable voyage she met with mandarins and sultans, explored temples and shrines and shared it all through her journals, collections, and the photographs she and her family collected or developed in the bathroom of their yacht. Her published accounts became bestsellers introducing readers to a world of travel and culture beyond European horizons. She was not the only global traveller in this period and this course will consider the wider cultural significance of burgeoning global travel in the nineteenth century. Specifically how Brassey presented the different cultures of the ‘East’ to her readership, creating cultural tropes that we still employ today.
