Students will read and discuss a variety of selected fiction and "quick reads" including poetry and short stories. They will be encouraged to express their opinions, likes and dislikes and reflect more broadly on the themes, plots, setting and characters in the texts.They will be given the opportunity to explore the content, form and language used by the different writers and consider their effectiveness in engaging them as readers.

Course aim

This course will develop learners' ability and motivation to read for pleasure through discussing a range of fiction texts.They will practise reading skills, develop an understanding of narrative writing and extend their vocabulary.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for those at an intermediate level with an interest in reading

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Read with accuracy and explore the main themes, plots, setting and characters in a range of fiction texts
  • Compare the use of language and structure used for a range of genres and audiences including formal, informal, prose, poetry and drama
  • Compare the presentation of themes and characters across two different writers
  • Discuss the impact of different writer's techniques on the reader and share own preferences
  • Review own choice of fiction text and present to the group

How will I be taught?

  • The tutor will facilitate discussion amongst the group with students encouraged to take the lead. Outside of the classroom, students will be required to undertake some reading in between classes in preparation for discussion.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources, record your progress and achievement and to work with others and share ideas.
