Following the defeat of Napoleon, Russia experienced an upsurge in nationalism, which revealed itself not only in Literature, as seen in the work of Alexander Pushkin, but especially in music. Following the example of Glinka, who sough to create a truly Russian music, his ideals were continued by a group of brilliant composers such as Balakirev, Borodin,Musorgsky etc who produced a body of highly original music, far different from anything being written elsewhere in Europe. Russian history,Russian folk song, the music of the Orthodox church are only some of the subjects to be discussed in this unusual and very comprehensive course given by an international authority.
