The course will cover the post war years of 1950-1959. Students will be able to learn about important events that took place during this time including how Britain had to recover from the bombings that took place during the war, how the priority of the country became to meet the needs of it's citizens and what life was like for the working class. We will look at the lives of women during the period, the education system and how working class people spent their free time. The course will be student led and they will be encouraged to give their own suggestions on course content. There will be several trips out to places of local interest.

Course aim

The course will cover the changes that took place in of Britain in the years after World War 2. We will mainly focus on the years between 1950-1959. The course will include what life was like in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas at the time.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • The course is for people who have a learning difficulty or disability, especially shy or socially isolated people.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a knowledge of what life was like in Britain in the 1950's especially for the working class.
  • Know about the lives of women during the 1950's and compare their lives to women in todays society.
  • Know about the education system during the 1950's.
  • Have a knowledge of how the working class spent their free time and the rise in popularity of the seaside holiday and holiday camps.
  • Be able to contribute to a student timeline. This will involve printing pictures and adding them to the timeline.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Students have a timeline that they will add pictures to during the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
