Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs for False Beginners

Ref: C3745147

This is a hieroglyphs and Middle Egyptian course for those with basic-level prior knowledge whether recent or some time ago. The course will consolidate and advance previous elementary study of the language with a combined focus on grammar and short texts. The class will introduce the genitive but most grammatical work will focus on verb types and forms. After a review of Pharaonic titulary and private officials titles we will read a selection of short extracts of funerary texts centered around the offering formula and additional tomb scenes, broadly covering the material in the central chapters of Collier and Manley "How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs".

Course aim

Designed for those with a slight knowledge of Egyptian Hieroglyphs this course will consolidate and advance previous study introducing verb types and forms and provide an opportunity to read and translate extracts from standard funerary texts.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • You should be able to read uniliteral Hierogyphs (with limited biliteral and triliteral characters) and have a knowledge of very basic concepts such as phonetic characters, ideograms, determinatives, phonetic complement and honorific transposition, roughly the material from C&M Chapters 1-2.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Identify verb types in Middle Egyptian
  • 2. Read, Transliterate and Translate short sentences in Hieroglyphs with selected verbal phrases
  • 3. Read, Transliterate and Translate selected elements of ancient Egyptian tomb scene texts
  • 4. Recognize the full Pharaonic titulary and transliterate names with the aid of a sign list.
  • 5. Use printed or digital resources to look up a range of words in Middle Egyptian

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Class time will include presentation of new concepts and texts, individual or collaborative completion of exercises, and group review of exercise solutions. While not essential it will help if you are able to undertake consolidation of material at home between classes.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Ongoing and informal, no tests or exams.

What else do I need to know?

  • The course will be partly based on the central chapters of 'How to read Egyptian Hieroglyphs' by Collier and Manley (published by British Museum Press) and a copy of either edition of this book will be required.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Students who have taken the autumn 2019 class should review the material covered. New students are welcome and should ideally read and complete the exercises from Collier and Manley Chapters 1 and 2 as required.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
