Suitable for men and women wanting to learn at S/L beginner level all types of plant care and propagation. Having opportunities to work within a team or alone with a range of tools on garden maintenance projects suitable to the INDIVIDUAL'S ability. Learning with support to become a good all round gardener. An opportunity to improve health and well being, mental health and happiness in general.

Course aim

An opportunity for supported learning students to improve health and well being through practical gardening and horticultural learning.This 4 hr session allows gardeners an opportunity to expand their knowledge and undertake small projects.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • S/L gardeners are expected to undertake tasks both inside and outside, therefore new gardeners may feel it necessary to visit before committing to the course eg to check facilities and accessibility for certain situations.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plant a variety of vegetable and flower seeds
  • Monitor their germination, prick out and pot on and water as needed
  • Identify a range of seasonal plants
  • Take part in a range of garden maintenance tasks, working alone and as part of a team
  • Identify a range of tools and equipment use safely, clean and put away after use.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will take part at the end of each session to record weather patterns, and verbally, (yourself or support staff) record your tasks that session in the group diary

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Suitable and appropriate clothing for all weather gardening. This applies also for support staff. PPE gardening gloves which fit the individual. Also for the support staff. NOTE BADLY FITTING GLOVES GLOVES ARE A HINDRANCE TO LEARNING AND GARDENING

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Garden visits and TV gardening programmes may be useful.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Progression routes are managed by the homes where budget and staffing and transport need to be considered
