Suitable for men and women wanting to learn at S/L beginner level all types of plant care and propagation. Having opportunities to work within a team or alone with a range of tools on garden maintenance projects suitable to the INDIVIDUAL'S ability. Learning with support to become a good all round gardener. An opportunity to improve health and well being, mental health and happiness in general.

Course aim

To provide opportunity for Supported Learners to garden, improve fitness and mobility, socialise and be closer to the natural world through horticulture and learning.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • S/L gardeners are expected to undertake tasks both inside and outside, therefore new gardeners may feel it necessary to visit before committing to the course eg to check facilities and accessibility for certain situations.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plant a variety of vegetable and flower seeds
  • Monitor their germination and growth, prick out and pot on, water as required
  • Identify a range of seasonal plants
  • Take part in a range or garden maintenance tasks whilst working alone or in within a team.
  • Identify and use safely a variety of garden tools and equipment, clean and put away after use.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • All tasks and assessment will be suitable to the individuals ability and support.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Learner gardeners will be expected to take part in discussing the sessions tasks and record in the group diary.

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Suitable and appropriate clothing for all weather gardening. This applies also for support staff. GLOVES WHICH ARE TOO BIG ARE A HINDRANCE TO LEARNING AND GARDENING.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Encouragement to visit gardens and to watch TV gardening programmes is useful to learning.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Any progression route is usually the responsibility of the home and funding available.
