Supporting Children with Autism

The course provides information on the medical side of the known autistic biology . It aims to provide information to allow learners to develop coping strategies to assist both themselves and their child at home and at school . It explores all of the difficulties faced by children and their carers and looks carfully at communication difficulties , emotional and educational difficulties and gives advise and support on ways to cope both at home and at school. It gives the learner information on home school communication and covers how to apply for an EHCP. The course gives carers , papents and perhaps other health care and educational individuals the opportunity to discuss and share experiences through interactive activities. The course also allows the learner to explore their child as an individual and look at their individual atreas of need or talent enhancing both for better management of the condition.

Course aim

The course is aimed at parents and carers of children with Autism or those expected to be on the Autistic Spectrum. It aims to provide strategies to help and support children and their carers both at home and at school.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will be able to identify the known medical causes for Autism and the biological and scientific understanding of the condition.
  • Identify the specific attributes of Autism building an individual map of your own child and focusing on areas of talent and need.
  • You will be able to formulate coping strategies based on your findings and find out about how to communicate with school and how to apply for an EHCP .
  • Discuss these strategies and difficulties with others and draw on the experience of others.
  • Develop strategies which will help your child and yourselves to better cope with the condition.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A note pad is useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
