The course will provide an outline of Russian culture from its earliest beginnings up to the present day. Special attention will be paid to Russian history, literature, art and architecture and musiv. The course is illustrated with CDs and DVDs.

Course aim

The course provides an outline of Russian history and culture from the year 988 A.D. to the present. Special attention is paid to literature, art and music, the course being illustrated with CDs and DVDs.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a clear idea of Russian history, this being achieved by studying the development of Russian culure from the earliest times.
  • Have a greater understanding of Russian literature, including discussion of Russian folk culture.
  • Have a more detailed knowledge of Russian music, including discussion of Russian chant, the rise of nationalism in the nineteenth century, Russian music during the Soviet period, with special reference to Shostakovich, and Prokofiev.
  • Have a clearer understanding of Russian art and architecture
  • Have a better idea as to why Russian culture is different from that of other countries there has always been a close connection between culture and poilitical events.

How will I be taught?

  • Most of your learning will take place in your class, but one or two sessions will be online using WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas, working by yourself or engaging with other students. If you want to understand more about our digital learning platform please visit:
  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • The course will include opportunities for group discussion and to ask questions from the tutor if necessary.

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Since ,the course is concerned with Russian culture, important names and events are all made available through the comprehensive notes provided by the tutor.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • It is hoped that this course will stimulate the student's interest in Russian culture, and that students will be encouraged to read Russian literature and listen to Russian music.
